2026 AAPI Heritage Event

San Quentin Rehabilitation Center

Celebrating Culture, Creativity, and Community

The Social Health Foundation was honored to serve as a proud sponsor of San Quentin Rehabilitation Center’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Celebration—an extraordinary event that brought together culture, creativity, education, and community in recognition of the rich histories and contributions of AAPI communities.

At the heart of this year’s celebration was a truly historic achievement: the creation of a large ceremonial paper dragon handcrafted by incarcerated residents with artistic guidance from Life On Art, a California nonprofit organization dedicated to using collaborative art as a platform for healing, storytelling, and social connection.

The dragon represented far more than an artistic centerpiece. Across many Asian cultures, dragons symbolize wisdom, strength, prosperity, protection, and renewal. Constructed entirely within San Quentin by the residents themselves, the ceremonial dragon became a powerful symbol of collaboration, cultural appreciation, and the capacity for creativity to flourish in unexpected places. This marks the first large-scale ceremonial paper dragon of its kind created inside a California state prison, demonstrating what is possible when rehabilitation is paired with artistic expression and meaningful community partnership.

Throughout the celebration, participants, institutional staff, community organizations, and invited guests came together to honor AAPI heritage through cultural presentations, shared dialogue, and artistic expression. The event reflected San Quentin Rehabilitation Center’s ongoing commitment to rehabilitation by creating opportunities for learning, mutual respect, and community engagement that extend beyond traditional programming.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our distinguished community partners and guest speakers, Anh Phoong of Phoong Law and Dr. Tai Faaleava, for generously sharing their time, knowledge, and encouragement with the San Quentin community. Their participation helped reinforce the importance of cultural understanding, service, and investing in the potential of every individual.

We also offer our  heartfelt thanks to Life On Art for sharing their remarkable expertise in guiding the creation of this historic installation. Their commitment to collaborative artmaking and community healing continues to inspire innovative approaches to rehabilitation and human connection.

Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center administration, event planning committee, the resident participants whose dedication brought the ceremonial dragon to life, community partner organizations, volunteers, artists, and staff members whose collaboration made this celebration possible. Together, your efforts demonstrated that when rehabilitation, culture, creativity, and partnership come together, they create opportunities for connection, restoration, and lasting impact.
